Alice Collins

European Communications Manager, HackerOne

Stay creative, agile and open to opportunities, the job you have now won't be forever.

What do you do?

I manage my business' relationships with media, making sure they have relevant and interesting stories from us and that we are commenting on breaking news about cyber security and vulnerabilities and hackers in particular. I spend a lot of time translating technical information for a general audience to make cyber security an easily digestible topic.

Why did you choose this field?

I chose to go into PR pretty much at random following university and ended up in an agency that specialised in technology. From the beginning I loved technology as a subject because it's so varied and there's always so much innovation that there's always news. Security is the most interesting and sexy sector to be in within technology and full of passionate and engaged people that telling stories about this topic is easy!

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

Securing my job at HackerOne to run my own communications programme in Europe getting to travel all over the world.

Why do you love working in STEM?

I love that there is always news so I check the news as soon as I wake up for breaking stories about ransomware, APTs or data breaches.

Best advice for the next generation

Stay creative, agile and open to opportunities, the job you have now won't be forever. I work in a marketing function but I get the opportunity to learn technical skills too and there are so many great organisations that work to up-skill women in tech that you can learn technical skills alongside working a non-technical job.
