Anne-Laure le cunff

Founder, Ness Labs

And - Ex-Googler, speaker, writer and neuroscience student

I love being able to build: I've always felt like problems are just puzzles waiting to be solved.

What do you do?

I'm an ex-Googler and an entrepreneur. I started a venture studio in London developing tech products with a focus on wellness, culture, and creativity. My work has been featured in WIRED, Forbes, and more. I also recently decided to go back to university, and I'm studying neuroscience part-time at King's College.

Why did you choose this field?

"I started coding websites and giving HTML templates away for free when I was 12."

Technology has always fascinated me. When I was 12 and my parents bought our first computer, I was maintaining several blogs and online forums, some of them with ten of thousands of users. When I was accepted at Google for a six-month internship in London, I was over the moon.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

"Speaking at a WIRED event to talk about my work was a dream come true."

When I was younger, I thought only tech billionaires were invited to share their thoughts on technology at such events. There is still a lot of work to do, but it's great to see the efforts being made to make the tech community more inclusive.

Why do you love working in STEM?

"I can't imagine working in another field."

Alongside scientific research, technology is one of the most powerful tools to advance humanity. It's also potentially one of the most democratic ones. As the cost of technology lowers, it becomes more accessible, and more talented people can turn their ideas into reality and have a positive impact on the world.

Best advice for the next generation

Reach out. Ask questions. Connect with potential mentors on Twitter and LinkedIn. Write. Most people in the tech community are delighted when young women are getting excited by science and technology, and would be very happy to help.
