Technology journalist

And - Founder, Gadgette

Don't listen to anyone who says you need this qualification or that experience.

What do you do?

I write about technology for websites and publications like The Guardian, the BBC, the Evening Standard, Techradar, Gizmodo, and lots of others.

Why did you choose this field?

"I love not having a boss."

I originally wanted to be a software engineer, but I didn't have the right A-levels, so I did English Language instead. That led to a job in advertising, where I volunteered for all the tech products because I'm a giant nerd. I got to work on two iPhone launches, which was very cool.

After that, I switched to tech journalism, becoming Reviews Editor and then Editor of a tech site. Eventually I opened my own site, Gadgette, and now I freelance for all sorts of places while running my life the way I want to.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

Getting into tech journalism! I could have started so much earlier, but I was told by the school careers advisor that journalism required all this unpaid work experience that I didn't have, and a journalism degree. It's not true at all.

Why do you love working in STEM?

"I love being a representative for women in tech media. There aren't enough of us."

I get to fly all over the world seeing how tech is made, I get to try all the coolest new stuff before it's available, and the opinions I express in my reviews help to shape the next generation of products.

Best advice for the next generation

Don't listen to anyone who says you need this qualification or that experience. There are people with a huge variety of backgrounds - from all walks of life - in STEM. I spoke to the VP of Alexa at Amazon the other day - her degree is in Anthropology!

Fave app

Google Keep. It's one of the amazing free things Google makes and doesn't shout about. It's like a digital post-it note service that syncs across your phone and laptop, you can create clickable hashtags to link related notes together, you can search, add audio and photos, tickable checklists -- it's so simple and so powerful.
