Oncologic Breast Surgeon, Mercy Hospital

Just do it - it is an extremely diverse field of study.

What do you do?

I am an oncologic breast surgeon. I see women with all types of breast problems. About 30% of my practice is breast cancer and the rest benign breast diseases. I do surgery to remove cancer from the breast.

Why did you choose this field?

"I have always (since the age of 3) wanted to be a doctor."

I chose to go into this specialty as it is a good combination of women’s health and surgery. And I enjoy the relationship that I form long term with my patients as I am with them from the moment they receive this devastating diagnosis to when they make it through their treatments.

I went into medical school wanting to be a gynecologist. Once I did my surgery rotation, I was sold on surgery. I had the fortune of having 2 great mentors in training who were breast surgeons that encouraged me and inspired me to pursue a career in breast surgery.

I am also lucky enough to have been raised in a household by parents who did not see any limits where education was concerned. We were encouraged to study high and aim high.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

There really is nothing. I feel a younger me knew everything was possible.

Why do you love working in STEM?

I love the ability to think through problems and solve them surgically.

Best advice for the next generation

Just do it. It is an extremely diverse field of study with a wide range of options for careers. And great options for leadership positions.
