WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a cybersecurity professional with 14+ years of rich experience in the information security domain. I am working with VMware Carbon Black as Senior Security Consultant & manage security presales for India (North Region).
As part of my role, I strive to help customers in identifying the risk & suggesting approriate security controls (tool /technogy /process) to mitigate the risk.
I believe in giving back to society & am associated with few security communities which helps in mentoring & guiding youngsters.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
I started my career as a network engineer which soon transitioned into the security space wherein I got a chance to work on perimeter security devices like firewall, IPS, proxy solution etc. As I started interfacing with customers in the security pre sales role, I really felt excited in listening & presenting solutions to their complex security requirements & eventually becoming their trusted security advisor.
HOW DO/DID YOU TACKLE OBSTACLES?
Cybersecurity is a very dynamic domain where new risk and threats keep evolving. Each complex requirement gives me an opportunity to look for innovative solution that mitigates business risk. I tackled these challenges by consistently learning and adopting new skills required to deliver the job. I accomplished some of the toughest security certifications/skills while working that gave me the ability to understand this domain and stay advanced in this dynamic field.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
I remember I used to be an introvert in my early days when it comes to asking questions and speaking up but the best way to tackle your fears is to face them. Gradually I felt quite confident and eventually delivered multiple security sessions/workshops in large forums. Believe me, it’s perfectly okay to learn things at your own pace but we need to make sure we are consistent in this journey.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
Working in STEM is really exciting and something I thoroughly enjoy. Being in the cybersecurity domain, I had the chance to work on complex opportunities, thus making me look for innovative ways to think and deliver security solutions.
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
STEM is a growing field with lot of potential, so the number of female workers needs to increase. My advice is to pursue it whole heartedly. With growing participation from young girls, we can make this industry better & bridge the gap to ensure equality in pay and opportunities.
