Just be disciplined about your learning.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I manage teams of data scientists who deliver AI based solutions for client. I also form the liaison between the client, my team and our founders. I play multiple roles that include client engagement, project delivery, team management and strategic planning.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
I faired well in math and science throughout my school life and 2 decades ago in India, if you rock the "science stream" you are headed towards engineering. My father insisted in spending every summer learning atleast one new skill and one such summer in 1992 or so I learnt a programming language called BASIC. I loved it from the word go. Even though, I took Electronics and Telecommunication engineering as my major, I continued learning a new programming language ever summer. I joined Infosys as a software engineer and continued in the field for 12 years till I took a break to raise my child. Recently, since my child is now much older, I took an interest in Artificial Intelligence. I'm now back with a bang into work life as project manager for AI solutions.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
I wish I knew the art of learning and the confidence to pitch for myself. I wish I knew that if I set my heart to learn anything I could do it.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
I love the problem solving challenges that are thrown my way. I like that my day is not routine. I never knew what technical challenge I would face that day and what learning was in store for me
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
Just be disciplined about your learning. Have confidence in you. Don't compare yourself with boys. Girls are often known to express their STEM interests differently from boys and both ways of thinking is necessary to flourish as a team.
INSPO / FUN FACT
