What do you do?
Being a scientist is incredible. Physics and science in general allow us to explore and understand everything around us. When I was a child I wondered why the sky is blue or how the human reached the moon. Well now, I know how to answer those questions and more. My job as a physicist is to answer questions that humanity has not yet answered, but more important and exciting those questions are important to me. To solve them you have to put clues that other scientists have left for you, it is very inspiring when you are solving the puzzle and you realize that mathematics and physics describe the entire universe very well.
Why did you choose this field?
I studied Physics because I wanted to become an Astronaut. When I was in elementary school, I went for the first time to an IMAX. There were projected a space movie about astronauts fixing a spatial station. I was in love, from that moment I wanted to become an astronaut, so I studied Physics. With the time, I realized that being at the nowhere into space wasn't what I wanted; however, I did not make a mistake, Physics is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I learned that all my curiosities can be solved with science. I have worked on many projects, everything related to biophysics because life and behavior are just amazing. My exact field is Complex Networks. In this field, we study every single system that can be described as a network, as twitter or the brain. What is more exciting that understand how humans behave from a social or biochemical perspective, yes, we can make equations to describe the fluxes of information between neurons into the brain, or the fluxes of information in twitter networks to change the decisions or perspective of awhole country.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
I wish someone has told me that is not that difficult.
Why do you love working in STEM?
Science is the best thing humanity has experimented. Science makes humans life easier and exciting, so much more exciting, just think one-second, look around, every human commodity is thanks to science. But more importantly, all human questions and problems can be solved with the beauty of science. STEM helps humans to do and to be better.
Best advice for next generation?
Dream big because you can! Question everything, do not give up and, always, always trust yourself. You will make mistakes and people around you too. In many ways, governments and society can make you feel that this job is not for you, but it is, it is! And you can go as far as you wish and work. You will fail and that is completely fine. It is fine to change what you believe you wanted and you want no more. There is plenty of time, take yours.
