What do you do?
I am a Civil Engineer with experience on construction sites, including building a large bridge and volunteering in Africa. I’m currently working in a design office advising construction sites on how to solve problems and carry out work safely.
Why did you choose this field?
I wanted to help people and to improve the lives of people in developing countries. I thought that I could help solve problems and provide solutions to things that made people's lives difficult in Africa. I am a problem solver and that it what engineering is all about. The satisfaction of seeing something you are working on being built and looking back at the finished article that will be there for generations to come is amazing.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
Being a key member of the team that built an award winning bridge in my home town of Sunderland - something that will improve people's lives and also looks iconic
Why do you love working in STEM?
Best advice for next generation?
Back yourself, this is something I am still working on. But just go for it and push those doubts to the back of your mind.
