Be frank, forward, and stand up for your goals.

What do you do?

I am a Biomedical Scientist trying to reduce cardiometabolic diseases by improving health before birth, and the heart's response to a heart attack in later life.

Why did you choose this field?

I've always loved bioenergetics. I fell in love with the field when I learned that you can improve health outcomes by manipulating mitochondrial function.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

As a first-gen university student from a single parent, immigrant household in a rural area, I never considered that I would start my academic career as a scientist at the University of Cambridge.

Why do you love working in STEM?

I love the "light bulb moment" that STEM provides. Improving science literacy at any age means people can make informed choices about their health and well-being, and engage their family and community in the conversation.

Best advice for next generation?

Be frank, forward, and stand up for your goals. If the area you're interested in doesn't exist, build it yourself.
