What do you do?
I graduated with Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering with Sustainability. Having covered the traditional mechanical engineering topics of mechanics, thermodynamics and materials I went into more detail regarding automation, industrial application and manufacturing techniques. I did some work experience within the electric vehicle space so decided to also cover a Sustainability elective which looks at improving all modes of sustainability. Basically, I have studied everything to help not only design a product, but also the modes to produce it and ensure minimal negative impact on the environment and society.
Why did you choose this field?
I have always been interested in product design, however, I followed an engineering path as I like to learn why products work and how the design influences their functionality. I was still passionate about design and innovation so chose a University and specific engineering stream that would allow me to use my creativity as much as possible.
I have always been a part of sports clubs. Most memorably - Exec of the University Mixed Netball Club. Working in a team like this emphasised to me that I want to work with lots of different people with their own skills and passions. Becoming a design engineer allows me to not only use my theory in a practical, creative manner, but also allows me to work in a team with specialist electronic engineers, mechanical theorists, a production team and so many more with knowledge I do not have but can learn from.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
I went from the girl that struggled with English, and went through spellings every weekend, to the girl who over 4 years of an Engineering degree completed 108 individual written/ presented assignments, including being a part of an Academic Technical Paper. That doesn’t even include exams, documentation completed in Industry or for Sports Club activities! I never thought that I’d ever be confident in my writing ability.
Why do you love working in STEM?
It’s solving today’s problems to make a better tomorrow. It’s a chance to continuously learn as our most prominent technologies in society change and use that knowledge to develop new technology, influencing and improving the way we live.
Best advice for next generation?
There are so many people in the same position as you, you just need to find them. The best way to find them, and to better your soft skills, those skills that will take you higher up in your career, take part in extra-curricular activities.

Inspo quote / fun fact / role model
My specific role models have all been within the family. I want to be as creative, dedicated and encouraging as my late family were whilst making them and the family that still support me everyday proud. They all taught me that as long as I’ve done my best I can’t be disappointed by the outcome.
