Ashley McCarthy-Griffiths

Technology Business Analyst, BHP

Have confidence in yourself.

What do you do?

At BHP, I work with a variety of teams across our Coal sites and Minerals Australia operations to identify and understand their current challenges and explore how we can leverage technology to deliver value by improving safety and productivity.

Why did you choose this field?

It was during my third year at university studying Mechanical Engineering where I undertook an internship which involved designing a conveyor belt where I realised this was not the field I wanted to be working in and found my passion in strategically working to combine technology and engineering together to challenging problems.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

I wish younger me would have known about all the potential opportunities a career in Engineering holds. To change this for young females and regional students I lead a not for profit Engineering shifting perceptions about Engineering in year 9 and 10 high schools students across Australia.

Why do you love working in STEM?

That no two days are the same.

Best advice for next generation?

Have confidence in yourself because you can achieve anything you set your mind to no matter what other people try to tell you.

Inspo quote / fun fact / role model

“Always remember that to argue, and win, is to break down the reality of the person you are arguing against. It is painful to lose your reality, so be kind, even if you are right.” - Haruki Murakami
