Assistant Professor, Columbia University
Don't doubt yourself.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I’m a full time researcher
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
I come from a family of scientists, biologists mostly. I liked science, but I wanted my impact on society and against social injustices to be more direct. I always had an interest in psychology, but as I went through grad school I fell in love with research and understanding emotional processes from a neuroscience perspective. When I saw I could use neuroscience to understand how disadvantage and adversity impact multiple generations I was sold.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
All of it. The entire ride has been wild and sometimes I still look back and am floored that Im doing all that I am doing and have the job I do.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
I think we have such a power to do good. And the idea of walking up everyday and being if only an inch closer to getting an answer on something we are passionate about
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
Don't doubt yourself. None of us are really that smart, we just work hard and you can too.
