Take some time to learn about the many facets of STEM and see where you might find your passion.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I lead a team of engineers, scientists and other professionals. Our main focus is to help companies limit their impact on the environment.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
As far back as I can remember, I have loved puzzles and mysteries. When I was 10, I received a geology kit for Christmas and the challenge of identifying every single mineral in that kit became an obsession. It was the start of my love for science. I went on to study chemistry in college and eventually became an environmental chemist, applying my analytical skills to identifying contaminants in the environment.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
In 2017, I was appointed to the Board of Directors for my company. As a humble girl from Depew, New York, I never saw myself in that type of role. If I could go back and talk to that girl, I would tell her "Accept the fact that you can't control what other people think of you and that you will never please everyone. Don't let others define who you are. You have unique gifts to share with the world that only you can uncover."
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
I love working in the science field because it is exciting. New technology give us insights that help us learn more about the world around us every day.
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
You need to understand that STEM includes many different disciplines that require very different skills. Take some time to learn about the many facets of STEM and see where you might find your passion. If you are creative and curious, you can find a place in STEM.
