Co-founder & Managing Partner, Pykih
Embrace beauty, grace and elegance.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a technology entrepreneur with background in Computer Science. At pykih, I design and build visual interfaces on top of data and content. This takes the shape of websites, content dashboards, reports, visualizations, charts, maps, visual essays, visual analytics and infographics. What makes pykih different is that we use cognitive psychology when designing the visualizations.
I am Global Shaper at World Economic Forum. As part of the community, I have led initiatives in the intersection of women empowerment and future of works that help working women professionals navigate the work environment.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
Formal education in India in Computer Science was very uninspiring. I spent most of my time reading up on art and design. I rejected the placement offer from one of the biggest IT company and co-founded pykih at 22.
I chose data visualization because it connected both left brain (algorithms, data science) and right brain (design, visual art) thinking.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
I was a shy person who lacked confidence. I would think my code and my work would talk for me. While that does happen, it is also important that you communicate with people in the right way and get their attention towards what you are doing. It is important to have strong people skills along with great coding skills. I wish I knew the art of selling my skills.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
Since childhood, I would spent hours drawing, writing poems or building softwares. What excites me every single day is getting my hands dirty designing and coding — creating a better future for myself and others. I am a net creator and not net consumer of things around me.
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
Don’t lose the feminine aspect of your life. Women should not compete with men. Women can carve space for themselves. Embrace beauty, grace and elegance.
