WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
While I'd been in the legal and public policy industry for the majority of my career, I've gravitated towards STEM my entire life. Always a geek intrigued by how things worked, and what I could build to make the world a better place. As a founder or partner in several technology companies and organisations, I am not only driven by the promise and realisation of the industrial revolution...but I am passionate about ensuring our youth are prepared to innovate and carry the torch forward.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
The creation, expansion, and development of the internet is fascinating in its ability to connect people from around the world. I suppose I knew it was possible, but its impact has transformed our lives well beyond communication. Cybersecuity is an example of an industry that has become increasingly relevant as a result. Artificial intelligence and its ethical (as well as business and technical) implications is another.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
I love everything about working in STEM: the information and knowledge itself; driving and observing its manifestations; its influenced on our entire worldview; the educational opportunities; and how it has paved the way for millions of girls and women worldwide to rise up, participate, and excel. When I wake up each day, one of my first thoughts, what I look forward to, is 'How can I inspire or empower someone today?'
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
Trust yourself and your path. When you know who you are and continue to do the work, that's your compass. Believe you belong, and never stop finding the best way to paint your canvas.
