What do you do?
I enjoy my job! Every day I have different tasks and every day I have the opportunity to learn something new. My team and I are developing an app using the programming language Kotlin. Usually, my workflow goes well and I can manage to do my tasks! But there are also times that I am stuck. When that happen, I'll dig into StackOverflow and the official documentation and, if I still haven't figured it out, I'll ask my colleagues. When I'm done with my tasks, they are reviewed (as are everyone else's tasks), the code is then tested to ensure that everything works as expected, and the product is made available to everyone.
Why did you choose this field?
When I was in university I was offered an internship. I wasn't sure what exactly I wanted to do in my career but I knew I was interested in coding, specifically in front-end development. During the internship, I had the opportunity to work in that area and found that I really enjoyed it. Since then I have been able to continue working in area and I haven't changed my opinion!
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
As I've mentioned, I love my job but I have another passion which is, traveling. When I was younger I couldn't imagine traveling abroad to many different countries, as it can be quite expensive. But I learned that if you really want something you can always find ways to achieve it. I'm currently a public speaker at tech conferences which means that I get to travel for free (I have traveled to Europe, Africa and the USA) while at the same time I get to attend and speak at large conferences. I have learned to never stop dreaming or believing in myself.
Why do you love working in STEM?
Because I get to learn something new every single day. I'll never get bored and I'll always have something new to play with. :)
Best advice for next generation?
Believe in yourself. You have time to do everything you wish, just be specific and start working on your goals now, not tomorrow. You can achieve everything and you know it.
