Esther Onyekachi Moore
What do you do?
I manage the team in coming up with geospatial solutions for various industry sectors in my country, helping these organizations understand the benefits of GIS in improving their efficiency, operations and decision making processes.
I work directly with the Sales and Technical teams to build these solutions through creating applications and demos that show how GIS works, and also in executing projects for these organizations that range from the utilities to the security and land administration sector.
Why did you choose this field?
I started off my undergraduate studying Surveying and GeoInformatics but it was not until my final year of school that I decided to pursue a career in GIS.
I would not say there was an aha moment, I just fell in love with the concept from when o was introduced to it.
I liked the idea of being able to create sense of the data in our world using location intelligence and how it applied to multiple sectors giving room for endless possibilities.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
I think it would be my current role where I am leading the team and making high level decisions for my company who is an official distributor and country representative of one of the world's leading GIS providers, Esri Inc.
Not that I thought it was impossible but I see it an achievement because it happened in such a short time.
Why do you love working in STEM?
The endless possibilities of new solutions to be created for the society and world at large, being a part of that process.
Best advice for next generation?
The world will always need science and technology.
Learn and adapt to new changes.
Continue to evolve.
