PhD candidate, UCL
Believe in yourself, follow your inner inspirations and be open to challenges.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a full-time student, conducting research on two environmentally friendly building materials as part of my PhD degree in Civil Engineering.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
In high school, I was mainly studying classical studies (Latin and Greek literature) as I wanted to become a lawyer. However, when I discovered Physics I was so fascinated by it that I decided to switch my future studies to Engineering.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
"You are your only limit". Sometimes, we persuade ourselves that something is impossible. It is our mind tricking us because we are afraid of failures. From mistakes, we learn, we grow.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
I am proud of being a woman working in STEM and I can see we are growing in number. I believe we bring our skills and a different mindset in a world that for a long time has been mainly made by man. I am looking forward to seeing where this change is going to bring us.
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
Believe in yourself, follow your inner inspirations and be open to challenges. Do not compare yourself to others, every path is different and is what will make you special.
