What do you do?
I work in the construction industry, typically on Infrastructure projects. As a project manager I am responsible for the overall initiation, planning, delivery, handover and close-out of a project. It can be similar to conducting an orchestra, a number of moving parts need to come together at the right time and I have to ensure everyone is aware of this to achieve successful collaboration.
Why did you choose this field?
Throughout school I loved math, chemistry and physics so I decided to study Chemical Engineering. It was in my final year assessment when completing a Design Project that I knew project management was the career for me. Joining a consultancy allows me to maintain variety in my role and diversify my experiences, and grow an extensive network. Construction wasn't a particular sector of interest initially, but the more I began to research the more I was drawn in. There is more to it than hi-vis and hard hats!
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
Graduating and moving to London at 20 years old.
It was at this moment all the pieces nicely fit together. To look at what I have achieved in the first two years of my career makes me very proud and knowing I enjoyed the process to get here is a bonus!
Why do you love working in STEM?
STEM pervades every part of your life. From the medicine we take when sick, to the bar of chocolate we snack on.
I wake up everyday knowing that my small contribution that day will have greater societal impacts, and truly make the difference.
Best advice for next generation?
