Jee Lin Ong

Project Engineer, Rolls-Royce Plc

Our future world depends on you young ladies to lead and to shape.

What do you do?

Lots of fun! One day I'd be liaising with suppliers to develope product, the next day I'd be analysing data and crafting solutions, other day I'd be planning for new product launch, sometimes I'd be procuring parts, justifying costs, sometimes running collaborative workshop or presenting reviews etc etc.

Why did you choose this field?

Watching airplanes take off really fascinated me as a child, the science behind it is even more mesmerising. Since then I knew Aerospace is the industry to go.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

Growing up in Malaysia, being able to secure a job in the UK is a far away dream, let alone working in a prestigious company.
Really grateful to graduate with a first in Aerospace engineering Degree and secured dream job in Rolls-Royce even before I started the final exam.
When I first started the job, always thought I'd bury my head behind the computer, but today I can speak up confidently leading meetings and discussions.

Why do you love working in STEM?

It is the drive to create new product for the future cleaner air travel. Everyday I wake up, Im one step closer to achieving that goal, contributing to the better world.

Best advice for next generation?

Be yourself, be bold. STEM (Engineering) are not just for the geeks!
Don’t worry about not fitting. You are equally capable as the male counterpart. Our future world depends on you young ladies to lead and to shape.
