You can do it! Always be curious!

WHAT DO YOU DO?

I do research.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?

I was attracted by science and environmental science already in primary and secondary school especially the marine environment. I like that idea that fundamental research is the source of knowledge as the ocean is the source of life.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"

When I was a child I thought that research was only medical research to save people. I was not aware of the idea of fundamental research. My family thought that a degree in biology and a degree in oceanography was a bit useless, especially for a woman. What was the point?

WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?

I love the idea of international networking. Being in touch with researchers from Germany, Spain, USA, India, ..., all in a single day and thinking how we could work together. I love travelling also!

BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?

You can do it! And do not forget that what you see on the CV of your professors, mentors is only their success! Failure is not shown. I fail almost all the time and still keep going. So keep going because Scientific progress is also built on failure. Always be curious! always be critical!
