What do you do?
As a structural drafter I work alongside Structural Engineers and develop 3D models and structural engineering plans for various buildings all across Australia. Through experience and a passion for people, I now also manage a team of Structural drafters/modellers and provide strategic advice to company directors in regards to continuous improvement.
Why did you choose this field?
As a high school student I didn't know that the job I do now even existed. Like most people I know I sort of stumbled into drafting, I had decided to start studying engineering at TAFE and later saw and advertisement for an Apprentice Structural Drafter, I read the ad and thought 'that sounds like me', so I applied and the rest is history.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
I think that just knowing that there are rewarding careers in engineering and construction, like structural drafting where you can be a part of the ongoing development of the built environment.
After almost 20 year I still get excited to see a building completed that I helped make a reality.
Why do you love working in STEM?
I love being a part of project teams and looking at whole buildings I have modelled in 3D. I love working alongside engineers, architects, project managers and builders to bring peoples vision to life. I also love the variety of buildings I get to work on such as schools, hospitals, apartments and commecial.
Best advice for next generation?
Be curious, there are many many jobs in STEM related fields beyond the obvious, ask around. You may just find your true passion in something you'd previously never heard of before.
