Research Assistant, Iowa State University
Your presence in STEM will make the world a better place for everyone.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a researcher in the field of toxicology. I look at how insecticides affect monarch butterflies.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
My favorite subjects are biology and chemistry and toxicology allows me to study both. My PhD advisor got me into the specific field of ecotoxicology (studying how chemicals affect non-human species) and he is definitely my role model!
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
I think growing out of the social norms and customs I was raised on. I am from a conservative society and younger me would never have thought it possible I would have the beliefs and life I currently do
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
Apart from how fascinating science is, I enjoy doing research and discovering new things - it is how humankind progresses. We can make the world a better place by employing what we learn - and we get to learn new things all the time.
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
I am a scientist and I know many women who do wonderful science, equal to or better than men. So never believe that women are inferior in STEM because that's absolutely false. And STEM needs more women to bring in their unique perspectives, energy, and intelligence. Your presence in STEM will make the world a better place for everyone.
