Analytical Chemist/Toxicologist

,,

,,

You know you. If you are determined enough you’ll be fine.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

Analysis of biological and non-biological substances such as urine, oral fluid, wastewater, pharmaceuticals using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS).

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?

I really enjoyed Maths and Physics at school, but I wanted to study something chemistry adjacent instead of pure Chemistry. I preferred this branch of Chemistry to organic and physical Chemistry. While studying AC at university, I had a Toxicology lecture that informed my decision to study Analytical Toxicology as a Master’s degree.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"

Being able to enjoy being an Analytical Chemist and being an illustrator/digital artist too !

WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?

Because it’s a constantly evolving field and every day that I work in my field brings a new challenge. I wake up looking forward to conquer such challenges.

BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?

Ignore what your teachers predict about your ability to reach certain grades/prosper in certain career path etc. You know you. If you are determined enough you’ll be fine. Also different opportunities in STEM are becoming available that weren’t available 10 years ago - times and roles are changing, there’s something for everyone.

INSPO / FUN FACT

“ If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it.” - Toni Morrison
