Phenyo Phemelo Moletsane

Master's Graduate (Big Data Science), University of Pretoria

A career in Science is really fun and rewarding with bright prospects.

What do you do?

My job entails making sense of data. I spend a lot of time collecting data, cleaning data, finding patterns, visualising data and using methods from statistics and machine learning.

Why did you choose this field?

My interest in Data Science stem from my curiosity about the world and my desire to tackle problems through technology. I learnt that this field satisfies my interests and inspire constant learning. As the field is always evolving, I get a chance to learn new things. I wanted a career that will not limit me to a particular sector, but expose me to multiple domains and problems, and data science was certainly the best fit for my interests.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

Upon leaving my previous job in 2017, I dedicated a significant portion of my time to further my Master's studies in Big Data Science and make a career change. Considering that I had no computer science background prior to enrolling for my studies, this has been my greatest achievement. It has been a steep but exciting learning curve through which I got to know myself better and learnt that not knowing is okay.

Why do you love working in STEM?

I look forward to solving problems and making real impact. I love the fact that there is collaboration and I get to learn from diverse backgrounds.

Best advice for next generation?

A career in Science is really fun and rewarding with bright prospects. You just have to enjoy and appreciate the learning process.
