What do you do?
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science and triple majoring in economics, mathematics and statistics.
Why did you choose this field?
Right from childhood, I have always enjoyed puzzles and numbers. Mathematics excites me as it has always challenged and pushed me to think more practically and apply logic in every situation. The thrill and happiness that came from understanding a tough theorem or solving difficult questions is something that made me realise that mathematics is something I would like to pursue.
My interest in this subject has also been nurtured by extremely supportive teachers throughout my schooling.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
After finishing 10th grade, I chose to pursue mathematics along with business studies, accountancy and economics. Back then, I thought that by not continuing physics and chemistry, I would not be able to pursue mathematics in my future, which was quite disheartening.
I now know it is still possible to convert my interest in mathematics into a fulfilling career in the field without necessarily being good at other science subjects.
Over time, I also learnt just wide the scope of mathematics was and how it can be applied in any field.
Why do you love working in STEM?
The best thing about STEM is that there is always something new to learn and discover. Every day, I come across a new fact or read an interesting article that changes my perspective on things around me and that thirst for knowledge never reduces in STEM.
Best advice for next generation?
My advice would be to not be discouraged by the supposed difficulty in STEM subjects. The benefits of STEM far outweigh the effort put into studying them.
Another thing I would like to stress upon is to find your own path to your passion, regardless of the approach your peers are following. The steps you take towards your own career must work the best for yourself.

“You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun.”
