Roberta Colombo

Project Engineer, Newcastle NSW

Don't be afraid to express yourself and your creativity.

What do you do?

I'm a problem solver, I create projects that can be rolled out on the field. I plan, organise and oversee the installation of solar system projects.

Why did you choose this field?

I chose engineering because I wanted to achieve and conquer something very challenging, very different from my family background. I chose the renewable energy sector because I wanted to make a difference in the future world.

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

My ability to put together different people and make them work together as a team with open, honest, respectful communications. We are able to understand the goals and commit to attain them together. The people in the team were comfortable to take reasonable risks, to express their creativity, innovation and different point of view.

Why do you love working in STEM?

I love working in STEM because I can create and express myself, and not been stereotyped.

Best advice for next generation?

Don't be afraid to express yourself and your creativity, you can do it with lots of STEM subjects. To succeed you need to get comfortable in a world that at the moment isn't, try things you’ve never done before, because you never know, it might turn out that you actually like it.

Inspo quote / fun fact / role model

“I believe that fortitude is key. More than anything, be consistent. Go at it. Go at it. Go at it. When you succeed, don’t forget the responsibility of making someone else succeed with you.” - Antonia Novello, Former Surgeon General
