I explore nature (particularly bacteria) to look for new potential drugs such as antibiotics.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
I grew up in Peru and my family is originally from the High Andes area where they had limited access to western medicine - so since I'm a little girl I've learned the traditional ways my family used nature to cure their own maladies which inspired me to unlock the science behind it
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
In 2019 I became a National Geographic Explorer to develop a new independent scientific and exploration project in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
The daily challenges and creativity my work requires. Not one day is like the other, and field work is definitely a highlight of what I do

Follow your interests even if it doesn't make much sense at first. When we are true to what calls our curiosity, a path begins to form to fulfill our call in life
