Tanya Janca

CEO and Founder, We Hack Purple Academy

Learn everything you can. Try everything that is available to you.

What do you do?

I'm the founder of a training academy that teaches IT professionals about security. How to write secure code, how to secure the cloud, how to do DevSecOps, etc. I create most of our content.

Why did you choose this field?

I was a software developer 17 years before I moved into security. Learning how to hack and secure things was so exciting for me, that I started giving talks and lessons. Before I knew it I was traveling the entire planet to teach people about security. Last year I made the plunge to start my own company and I've never looked back!

What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?

When I was 23 I started my own company, but back then there was not the same infrastructure and learning resources for startup companies like there are today. I waited 18 years to start my next tech company, I wish younger me had known that it all changed in that time. I would have started a company again, sooner.

Why do you love working in STEM?

I love solving problems, and helping people. Securing software and teaching people is both, every day.

Best advice for next generation?

Learn everything you can. Try everything that is available to you. Find the niche that is just right for you, then pursue it until you get there. We believe in you. You CAN do it!
