Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something just because you are a girl, and if they do, just do it to prove them wrong.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I consult in the fields of environmental management and climate change primarily. I do work for local and international organizations and try as best as possible to help them to harmonize their developments with the environment. I get to travel all around the Jamaica as well as within the Caribbean which is often eye opening, tiring but always exciting.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD?
My dad was in the Jamaican Coast Guard when I was young and we grew up by the beach. He spent a lot of time explaining how things worked in nature, showing me the stars at night, going on hikes in the mountains. Nature was always all around me and I grew to really love it from an early age. I read lots of adventure books growing up so by the time I was about 16 I just knew that I had to do something in the environmental field. I loved geography all the way through high school and decided I loved it so much I wanted to study it in University. I ended up doing geography all the way to the PhD. I have passionate about the environment for so long, I just could never imagine myself doing anything different.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT & THINK, "I WISH YOUNGER ME WOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS POSSIBLE?"
My younger self only thought it was important to get a first degree and then get a job. I would never have imagined I would have gone all the way to getting my PhD and working at the top environmental company in Jamaica. If I told my younger self that she probably would have rolled her eyes and laughed me off.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN STEM?
There is always something new and exciting to do. There is always a challenge to solve. I love the team I work with, they are all like-minded which makes it that much better to get dressed and go to work everyday.
BEST ADVICE FOR NEXT GENERATION?
