Managing director, Softwire
And - Actor and filmmaker.
My work is full of interesting problem solving and there are lots of opportunities for career development.
What do you do?
I run the company! Softwire codes software projects for other businesses. I am responsible for ensuring that we have enough new business, that we deliver the projects we have committed to well and making sure that everyone is happy.
Why did you choose this field?
I studied science and then maths at university. I also did a small amount of hobby programming at home. I was invited to apply to Softwire. The interview tests were fun and I thought, this could be a cool job.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
I have just started pursuing acting alongside my day job.
Why do you love working in STEM?
Working in STEM is fantastic. Softwire is a very modern company so attitudes to work-life balance are brilliant. My work is full of interesting problem solving and there are lots of opportunities for career development.
Best advice for next generation?
STEM (especially coding!!) is a great area to work in if you are female. Workplaces are flexible - all of our female employees who had children were able to come back part-time into the same role. Tech companies are really starting to focus on diversity and there are loads of great groups for women in STEM. Also STEM jobs (especially coding) tend to be well paid, which is brilliant if you want to work part-time at any point!
Inspo quote / fun fact / role model
I just learnt about Margaret Hamilton (scientist) from a post on Facebook. And I really recommend Hidden Figures, which is a fantastic film!
