Maths student, University College London
And - Co-founder, UCL Women in STEM society
Never be scared to try. Success will never come if you give up, or never try at all.
What do you do?
I am a Second Year BSc Mathematics Student at UCL. I helped co-found UCL Women in STEM Society at UCL that strives to promote diversity and inclusion in STEM and to encourage all genders to pursue studies/careers in STEM disciplines. My friend originally came up with the idea for the society because currently women are incredibly underrepresented in STEM and we see this to be unacceptable. The society aims to tackle the gender inequality in STEM by inspiring all genders to pursue STEM careers and studies.
Why did you choose this field?
I chose Mathematics because I have always loved problem solving and have been fascinated by it. There is constantly an abundance of topics to learn about and problems to solve in Mathematics, hence, it is a fascinating subject to study.
What do you look at and think, "I wish younger me would have known this was possible"?
Studying Mathematics at UCL and achieving 4A*s in my A-levels (in Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry) are undoubtedly two of my proudest achievements.
Why do you love working in STEM?
I love studying a STEM degree because there are constantly new concepts to learn about and questions to solve. STEM is constantly evolving and growing and there are always knew topics to research and discover.
Best advice for next generation?
The best advice I have received and would like to pass on is to always believe in your abilities and to never be scared to try. Success will never come if you give up or never try at all. Another immensely important piece of advice is that you should never be scared to break down the stereotypes and you should always follow your passion. Never let anyway dissuade you from pursuing what you are truly passionate about.
